We are three churches and a mosque united to bring an extended family of Syrian refugees to Canada. We welcome you to help us.

We are the West End Interfaith Refugee Support (WEIRS) group, a neighbourhood mix of congregations in Toronto’s west end that are responding to the global migration crisis by sponsoring an extended family of Syrian refugees who need a new safe home in Canada. We are volunteers, friends and neighbours from the Anglican Church of Epiphany & St. MarkIslamic Information and Da’wah Centre, Redeemer Lutheran Church, and St. Anne’s Anglican Church. We welcome everyone to join us in this mission.

Our mission is to sponsor and personally welcome an extended family of Syrian refugees to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), supporting them in many ways to help them through a year of transition in their new home, and adjusting to a new life after escaping the chaos of a humanitarian crisis that is reaching unthinkable proportions.

In 2011, Syria was a country of 23 million people. Now after five years of war and chaos, with no end in sight, over half of that population have been killed or forced to flee their homes. More than four million Syrians now live as refugees in neighbouring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt, awaiting international aid or sponsorship. Half of them are children.

The family we sponsor will come from such a refugee camp. We are working hand-in-hand with the Anglican United Refugee Alliance (AURA) which has been welcoming refugees to Canada for over three decades. The Syrian family we welcome will have passed through all the necessary security screenings.

As we prepare to receive this family, we are organizing volunteers into working groups that each prepare for the family’s tangible needs such as housing, food, education, language support, clothing, health care, transportation, furniture and more. Once they arrive in Canada, we will of course work in consultation with the family to help them organize these basic needs.

What we need now is your donation.

We encourage you to donate at CanadaHelps.org. Thanks to generous donations, we are now $25,000 away from our $80,000 fundraising goal, the amount recommended to support and integrate an extended family in the GTA for a year.

Please help us reach our new goal of $25,000. Each donation of $20 or more receives a tax receipt. Every donation helps.
